Alive and Breathing

Been ages since I last blogged, and so I thought it would be appropriate with an update.

I have spent most of these last months flat-hunting, reading comics, indulging myself in tv-shows, writing, expanding my musical horizon, and editing on WoW Wiki.

After about a year of flat-hunting, I finally found one at a decent price last week. Suffice to say, I am pretty excited about this, despite the fact that I have some heavy shopping  that doesn’t involve comics (!) to do.

Among the tv-shows I have been watching are: The Wire, Dexter, Babylon 5, The Boondocks, Entourage, Jeeves and Wooster, Family Guy, A Bit of Fry & Laurie and The 4400. I might write elaborate posts on some of these shows, so give a shout if there’s anything you’re interested in reading about.

To be honest, I haven’t written too much, aside from the odd school assignment now and again. I have several ideas an concepts in mu head, but I’m too much of a damn slowpoke to write it down. Some of my assignments include two papers on Northern Ireland – 1 in English, and 1 in social science -, a book analysis on “Trainspotting”, and several other minor papers.

I have recently begun editing on WoW Wiki, mostly adding a little information, or correcting errors in various articles. My biggest contribution so far has been on This Article. 90% of what you see there has been written/added by me, and I will add more information and links eventually.

Anyway, that’s all for now. More posts on movies, tv shows, comics, books, geekiness and general information will be added soon.

I’d be interested to say what you’d have to say on The 4400. I found it got steadily better as it went on, and was finally starting to be a show I didn’t just like well enough but geniunely thought about when it wasn’t on and looked forward to watching just when it was cancelled. The last season, as I recall, was very good, whereas the (very short) first season wasn’t all that.

As I recently (day before yesterday!) finished The Wire myself, that could be fun. It’d also be nice to see what someone who’s already seen BSG and Firefly thinks of Babylon 5, as back when I watched it, it was basically the only thoroughly good sci-fi I’d tried out, and I suspect I might have liked it a good bit less if I’d had such shows in the back of my mind to compare it to.

And Amras has me almost convinced to watch Dexter and Entourage. So if you’d like to add to or subtract from his argument for me to do so, there’s your chance. Oh, and The Boondocks I’ve heard just about nothing about, so that could be interesting as well…

(And no, I don’t actually expect you to write posts about all of that. ;) Take your picks.)

Something you don’t need to write a post on but that’d be nice to get a quick reply on, by the way, is Fry & Laurie – I’ve watched a lot of what I assume is their better skits on youtube. Is it really worth it to watch the entire show from beginning to end when I’ve already seen stuff like their Margerie-sketches and the student with the dark poems?

  2. I’ll second everything Loki said in the above comment, though I’d probably be most interested in reading something about The Boondocks and whether you think Entourage is as good as I think it is.

I have only watched 1 season so far, and found it to be a tad disappointing. This was mostly due to the revelations in the season finale. However, if the show gains considerable strength through the next seasons, I will probably continue watching it.

I am about to start on season 5 of The Wire, and this show definitely deserves at least one post.
Though I prefer BSG and Firefly, Babylon 5 remains a very strong show, at least judging by the 2 seasons I have watched so far. Writing a post about it is on my “to-do” list.

Not much to subtract from Dexter and Entourage, both shows are really strong, especially Dexter. I remember sitting completely chained to the screen while watching both seasons of Dexter, it’s breathtaking to say the least :)
The Boondocks is an animated series based on Aaron McGruder’s comic of the same name. Controversial and very political, The Boondocks completely avoids the childish humor that so often stains fellow animated shows, such as South Park, Family Guy, Simpsons etc.

I will probably add posts on these shows eventually.

I’m not sure how many of their skits are currently available on youtube. If most of the skits can be found there, than I suppose there’s not too much of a point to watch the entire series from beginning to end. One does run the risk of missing out on some jewels though, but I think it’s safe to say that the most popular ones all end up on youtube.
It is one of those things that are nice to do at some point,

but should by no means be prioritized over other more important shows.

Posts shall be added, because these are two amazing shows, in their own very different ways. Entourage maintains a unique dynamic between the main characters, and Ari Gold is simply on of the coolest agents ever seen :D

Thank you for the thorough reply!

The 4400 DOES gain considerable strenght as it progresses, but it does so slowly, I must admit. While it on the season-plot-level gets rather good already in seasons 2 and 3, it doesn’t shake the episodic “freak of the week”-recipe properly until season 4, which is a big minus in my book. They get rather good at tying such episodes up towards the main plots after a while, I seem to recall, but it’s still a less than ideal way of making tv.

You’ve got me piqued with the Boondocks now, I must admit…

If you like B5 after two seasons, I see no reason why you wouldn’t keep doing so, as the show on the most part gets a little better per season if I remember correctly. (Some loss of pace in the fifth season as they tied up many plotlines in the fourth in fear of cancellation, but that’s really the only negative in the development) Just as with the 4400, the weaker episodes are usually the more standalone plotindependent episodic ones, and you get less and less of those.

  5. Loki says:

Oh, and what was the revelation in The 4400’s first season finale? It’s been years since I saw that…

  6. Shirgaal says:

I really love the intricate and VERY thought through plot.
I enjoyed how season 1 was filled with signs (Or Omens ;) ), signs so subtle that you won’t have a clue of what it will bring until the season finale..
Season 2, however, contain less stand alone episodes, and gradually reveals more and more, but still maintaining a veil of mystery.

That’s what I truly love about the show, It has so far completely refrained from rushing the plot. Though this changes, as you revealed, in season 4, I’ll still keep on watching ;)

“Oh, and what was the revelation in The 4400’s first season finale? It’s been years since I saw that…”

It was the revelation of the the perpetrators behind the whole kidnapping, and its purpose. I was somehow disappointed with this, and felt that it the purpose was a bit classic.

  7. Loki says:

Hm. Really? I can’t recall the episode, but if the revelation was what I seem to recall it must have been, then I thought it worked out rather well in the end as it opens up for a lot of interesting plots.
